Dr. Craig Walker Performs Landmark Case in China

MEDICAL MILESTONE ACHIEVED IN CHINA:
Craig Walker, MD Performs Landmark Case

Dr. Craig Walker Live Cath Lab Case in China

LAFAYETTE, LA — Dr. Craig Walker, interventional cardiologist, Founder, President and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Institute of the South, performed the first use of laser and drug-coated balloon technology in China during a recent physician teaching opportunity in Beijing.  The educational trip consisted of a series of lectures and live cases showcasing Spectranetics laser technology.  Over the course of the trip, Dr. Walker was scheduled to perform eight live cath lab cases in three of the top cardiovascular centers in Beijing.

On November 6, at Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University, Dr. Walker encountered a particularly difficult case.  A low limb blockage was discovered in a patient with a recently-implanted stent.  This was the fourth intervention undergone by this patient.  Using the Spectranetics CVX-300 Excimer Laser System, Dr. Walker was able to successfully remove the thrombus and save the leg of the 70-year-old woman who suffered from a 40cm long blockage in the artery.

“These cases were complex, but we were able to achieve 100% clinical success.  This outreach represents an invaluable opportunity to share our knowledge and technologies with the medical community in China that has a patient population with a high and growing rate of peripheral arterial disease,” stated Dr. Walker.

This laser and drug-coated balloon technology was used at all three of the hospitals during the China trip.  Assisting Dr. Walker with the cases were Drs. Yongquan Gu, Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University, and Yinghua Guo, 301 Military Hospital.

The Spectranetics CVX-300 Excimer Laser System is the only excimer laser system and disposable catheter for the treatment of peripheral and coronary arterial disease available commercially.
