Lafayette is a hub for the many communities in south Louisiana, representing the Cajun, Creole and antebellum life-styles of the Deep South. Lafayette is part of an area known as Acadiana. This area is made up of eight parishes and is known as the "Cajun Heartland." The eight parishes are Acadia, Iberia, Evangeline, Lafayette, Vermilion, St. Mary, St. Martin and St. Landry. The Lafayette Parish School System is the state's 7th largest public school system with 43 schools and more than 30,000 students. The Lafayette Parish School System offers the program Schools of Choice at the elementary, middle and high school levels. This program offers specialized courses or themes, which give students the core curriculum required by state guidelines in the context of a subject in which the student has an interest. All students in the parish are eligible to apply for admission to any school of choice. Inspired by a rich and diverse cultural base, the citizens of Lafayette Parish enjoy a variety of private educational offerings. The oldest of these is the school system offered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette. Thirteen Catholic schools are located throughout Lafayette Parish. In addition, 14 other private schools offer individual attention and excellent programs of study.
Augmenting the formal educational processes are several vocational/technical schools in Lafayette Parish serving a variety of needs for thousands of students. Programs available at these schools range from nursing, business and computer programming, to real estate, cosmetology and the travel industry.
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is located only 18 miles from New Iberia in Lafayette. Founded in 1898, ULL is the second largest university in the state. ULL is made up of 10 colleges and schools that offer eighty undergraduate degree programs and 29 master's degree programs. As a selective admissions university, ULL graduates about 1,200 students each fall and spring.
As the heart of medical care in Acadiana, Lafayette continues to expand its advanced and specialized medical services with state-of-the-art facilities and procedures. Lafayette has five major hospitals with more than 1,000 beds. The parish has a 911 emergency response system and is home to Acadian Ambulance Services Inc., the nation's largest rural ambulance company, offering ground and air paramedic services. Lafayette also has numerous surgery centers, chemical dependency facilities, rehabilitation hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, support groups and more than 100 dentists. |
