Iberia Parish's culture is a mixture of French, Spanish, and Acadian influences, which results in a blend of Old World heritages, and the spirit of young America. New Iberia, the parish seat of Iberia Parish, lies on the banks of Bayou Teche. New Iberia was incorporated in 1836, noted for its warm hospitality, New Iberia is fondly called "The Queen City of the Teche." Education
Public and Private Schools
The Iberia Parish School System is comprised of 32 schools, 5 high schools, 4 middle schools, and 23 elementary schools. The majority of the 32 schools are located in or near the centers of populations. The total student population is approximately 14,700. The Iberia Parish School System employs approximately 2,000 individuals each year.
Vocational/Technical
LA Technical College - Teche Area Campus is located on 39.1 acres of land at the Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia. The campus is a modern facility, consisting of a main building, an early childhood education center, and an electricity shop all equipped with up-to-date tools for student training. The Teche Area campus offers building trades, office occupations, computer technology, electrical, practical nursing, welding, pre-vocational and related training.
Higher Education
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is located only 18 miles from New Iberia in Lafayette. Founded in 1898, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is the second largest university in the state. ULL is made up of 10 colleges and schools that offer eighty undergraduate degree programs and 29 master's degree programs. As a selective admissions university, ULL graduates about 1,200 students each fall and spring.
Healthcare
New Iberia offers its community two full service hospitals, Dauterive Hospital and Iberia Medical Center. Dauterive Hospital prides itself on providing the highest level of care to patients. The facility offers residents complete medical services and offers expanded community support and educational offerings. Iberia Medical Center includes a staff of more than 500 healthcare professionals and over 140 physicians. The medical center has grown to become a comprehensive healthcare provider that offers high quality care for almost any health need.
Points of Attraction
Main Street
New Iberia's Main Street is known for its charm and commerce. The streets are lined with grand oaks and well-kept lawns. Main Street includes the business district, which offers a wide array of goods and services. A popular attraction, the bayou boardwalk, draws both tourist and locals who wish to enjoy a few peaceful moments. With its distinctive look, historic attractions and present day businesses, the Main Street area provides an entertaining walking tour, a charming place to do business, and a pleasant diversion for residents and tourists alike.
Shadows-on-the-Teche
A property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Shadows-on-the-Teche is an antebellum home visited by more than 25,000 people annually. Constructed between 1831 and 1834 by sugar planter David Weeks, the home is a tangible link to the past, representing over 150 years of history. Preserving a "picture of the life" is part of the mission at Shadows-on-the-Teche. The site includes the collections of more than 17,000 family papers from four generations that present an authentic portrait.
Konriko Rice Mill and Company Store
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Konriko Company Store on the grounds of America's Oldest Rice Mill shares history and joie-de-vivre (joy of life). A tour of the mill includes a historically accurate presentation on Cajun culture, how it began and how it developed. It continues through the old rice mill where you can watch locals package rice and make rice cakes. Built in 1912 by founder Phillip Conrad, Sr., the mill creaks and groans, but still produces the finest quality rice in America. The company store includes an assortment of interesting local products, said to be the best in Louisiana.
Recreation
Louisiana is known as "The Sportsman's Paradise," this refers to the abundance of opportunities for serious fishing, hunting and boating. Iberia Parish offers many other popular sports and recreation facilities which support that colorful nickname. For the hunting fanatic, ducks, deer, rabbit, dove and quail are plentiful game in this area. Much of the nearby Atchafalaya Basin is open to the public for hunting. The coastal marshes offer excellent duck and goose hunting. Ducks Unlimited actively promotes wildlife preservation and hunter education in Iberia Parish. Fishermen in Iberia Parish can choose from a variety of freshwater and saltwater fishing spots including freshwater hotspots such as Spanish Lake and the Atchafalaya Basin.
Fifteen playgrounds and parks are maintained by the City of New Iberia. The largest park, New Iberia City Park, has a community center with a gymnasium, dressing rooms, game rooms, meeting rooms and kitchen facilities. The Community Center is the headquarters for the many programs run by the city's Recreation Department. Youth programs include basketball, softball, tennis, archery, baseball, swimming, crafts and special programs at City Park. The park's popular summer camp program offers day-long activities to young children who are supervised by qualified and responsible counselors. Adult programs include tennis, volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer and exercise classes. League softball is very popular in Iberia Parish, and the recreation department organizes softball leagues that participate in the Amateur Softball Association, United States Slowpitch Softball Association and Industrial League competition programs.
T-Ball and Little League provide girls and boys the opportunity to participate in organized team baseball from April through the summer. Iberia Parish also has a soccer league that has become popular with children of all ages.
Parks throughout the city provide a variety of children's playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis courts, swimming pools and recreation centers. Many of the same programs available through City Park can be enjoyed in a large number of rural parks as well. Professional leadership provides the citizens of Iberia Parish with attractive, safe parks and a well-rounded program of organized activities throughout the year at a very nominal cost to its citizens.
