Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) is one of the nation's most respected groups of cardiologists, representing nearly every specialty in heart and vascular medicine. While most leading medical centers are located in a single facility within a large city, CIS and its staff of nearly 450 dedicated team members and approximately 34 physicians bring omprehensive cardiovascular care close to home by serving patients in 12 locations throughout south Louisiana.

CIS offers a comprehensive heart and vascular program that includes specialized medical professionals trained in nuclear cardiology, electrophysiology, prevention services, and lipid management, as well as interventional cardiovascular procedures. The institute is a world-leader in treating peripheral arterial disease.

CIS has made significant contributions to the development of non-surgical treatments for cardiovascular disease. Because the institute is on the leading edge of technology in this field, patients can be assured that each case is thoroughly reviewed and all available treatment options are considered.

CIS is constantly expanding services to meet the medical needs of the population. The institute offers the fastest computed tomography (CT) scan system available and trains others from across the nation in its use.

Why CIS

Cardiovascular Institute of the South is one of the United States' largest, most comprehensive and most advanced centers for the treatment of heart and vascular disease. CIS was founded in 1983 by Dr. Craig M. Walker in the small southern Louisiana city of Houma -- an area which has one of the highest incidences of cardiovascular disease in the industrialized world. That practice, then named Houma Heart Clinic (now known as Cardiovascular Institute of the South-Houma), grew within a single decade into a group of more than 30 physicians representing every specialty in heart and circulatory medicine, with clinics in more than a dozen communities.

From the outset, Dr. Walker had envisioned the Institute as a center for the development of new and improved techniques and technologies for the treatment of heart and peripheral vascular disease. Houma Heart Clinic quickly established an international reputation in clinical research, participating in the development of every major technology to be approved for clinical testing since its founding.

The establishment of CIS in the Louisiana bayou country was a deliberate challenge to the widely held perception that leading-edge medicine was the exclusive purview of huge multi-specialty clinics and academic medical centers. CIS's demonstration that world class medicine could be provided in smaller cities through a geographically dispersed institution earned him the honor of being named one of the U.S. Jaycees' Ten Outstanding Young Americans in 1992, which is now among many other honors he has achieved over the past 25 years.
