South Lafourche is a small, but industrious community known for its Cajun way of life. The South Lafourche area includes the communities of Lockport, Larose, Cut Off, Galliano, Golden Meadow, Leeville and Port Fourchon.
These communities follow the bayou, which changes from a lazy, slow moving stream surrounded by sugar cane fields, to a widened, quick, vibrant and busy waterway. As you move south, you will notice increased boat traffic from offshore oil-related vessels, pleasure crafts, shrimp boats, oyster boats and small mud boats.
Besides the offshore industry, Galliano is home to a Christmas boat parade, the Tarpon Rodeo, the French Seafood Festival, and the Cajun Heritage Festival. Also, the beaches of Grande Isle are just minutes away.
Located in the heart of Galliano is South Lafourche High School. The school has served the area for 40 years as an education agency as well as a center of cultural activity for the community. South Lafourche High School serves grades 9-12 in the Lafourche Parish School District.
Galliano is also only 45 minutes away from Nicholls State University, which enrolls approximately 7,500 students and offers nearly 80 degree programs. Louisiana Technical College, offering about 15 degree programs, has a campus located in Galliano as well.
CIS in Galliano is located at Lady of the Sea General Hospital. This acute-care inpatient hospital offers a variety of services to the South Lafourche community while providing high-quality health care and personal service to patients. |
