Dr. Peter Abel completed his undergraduate training at Florida State University and earned a Master of Science degree in exercise physiology. His medical degree was acquired from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, receiving a Merck Award for Cardiology.
His internship, residency and fellowship in cardiology were completed at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. He subsequently served as the head of the cardiology section and medical director for cardiac rehabilitation at Ochsner Clinic of Baton Rouge and co-director of the Ochsner Interdisciplinary Lipid Service before joining the CIS medical staff.
As medical director of the CIS Morgan City clinic, Dr. Abel specializes in prevention of heart disease and rehabilitation of heart patients. Dr. Abel has conducted several research studies on lipids.
Dr. Abel is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, and he is also an interventional cardiologist. Dr. Abel is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
