How Does Diabetes Affect the Heart? 

Having diabetes means that you are more likely to develop heart disease.  Over time high blood glucose levels can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart.  The longer that you have diabetes, the higher your chances are to develop heart disease.  

People with diabetes tend to develop heart disease at a younger age.  For adults with diabetes, the leading cause of death is heart disease and stroke.

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood glucose can damage blood vessels
