Heart disease had already impacted Gloria Broadway’s family, but she never imagined a free screening would save her life – or that just months later, her daughter would suffer a heart attack of her own.
After experiencing ongoing fatigue and shortness of breath, Gloria attended a free vascular screening at Cardiovascular Institute of the South in Baton Rouge. There, she met cardiologist Dr. Shashi Gavini, who recommended further evaluation. Testing later revealed four coronary blockages. Gloria underwent robotic bypass surgery followed by stent placement and is now feeling better than she has in years.
Just months into her recovery, her daughter, Naomi Booker, suffered a heart attack at age 54. After initially dismissing her symptoms as heartburn, Naomi began experiencing nausea and nonstop vomiting. She was rushed to the hospital, where Dr. Amit Patel, interventional cardiologist at CIS in Baton Rouge, discovered a 100% arterial blockage and placed life-saving stents.
Today, both women say they feel healthier than ever and are using their experience to encourage others to listen to their bodies, understand their family history and risk factors, and get screened – emphasizing that early detection can save lives.
