Lafayette, LA – Dr. Marc Saad, electrophysiologist at Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS), became the first in Acadiana to use the OmniaSecure™ defibrillation lead at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center on March 24. The lead supports conduction system pacing (CSP) by tapping into the heart’s electrical system.
Developed, manufactured, and distributed by Medtronic and approved by the FDA, the OmniaSecure™ defibrillation lead is the first of its kind to support CSP. It is also the smallest-diameter defibrillation lead on the market and features lumenless construction for durability and precise catheter delivery. The lead can be placed in the right ventricle or left bundle branch (LBB) area and connects to an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) to treat potentially life-threatening heart rhythms, including ventricular tachyarrhythmias and fibrillation.
“Conduction system pacing is a rapidly advancing and growing therapy for patients who need a pacemaker,” said Dr. Saad. “This is being done through left bundle branch (LBB) area pacing. Now, patients who need both a defibrillator and pacing have an option that can safely deliver life-saving defibrillation therapy while also activating the heart’s natural electrical system (through the LBB area) to enable a more synchronous, physiologic pattern. For patients who require chronic pacing and defibrillation therapy, the OmniaSecure lead can offer treatment for dangerously fast arrhythmias while delivering conduction system pacing through the LBB area.”
