HOUMA—Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) is the first in the state to utilize the Houdini® catheter which allows for more accurate placement of a guidewire and crossing of challenging lesions during a peripheral interventional procedure. Dr. Pradeep Nair, interventional cardiologist at CIS, was the first to use the device on February 22 at Terrebonne General Medical Center.
The Houdini® catheter addresses the need for a more predictable process when placing a steerable guidewire in discrete areas of the peripheral vascular system. The device is a dual-lumen intravascular catheter intended for percutaneous use in the iliac, femoral, ilio-femoral and popliteal arteries. It facilitates guidewire advancement through challenging environments in a reliable, efficient manner using a balloon-actuated distal anchoring system coupled with a unique everting lumen with TrueForwardTM technology.
“This new technology has the ability to accurately and efficiently place a guidewire through complex chronic total occlusions in the peripheral arteries of the leg,” explained Dr. Nair. “For the interventionist, this adds to our collection for attacking complex occlusive disease of the peripheral arteries. Most importantly, for patients, this can translate to a more accurate procedure, which may ultimately improve outcomes.”
“Treatment of the superficial femoral artery is difficult and challenging,” commented Paul Tyska, CCO of Cruzar Medsystems Inc. “This game-changing technology is a breakthrough mechanism of action, and Cruzar is excited and honored to be working with CIS in the treatment of peripheral artery disease.”
