Lafayette, LA – Dr. Ankur Lodha, interventional cardiologist at Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS), became the first CIS physician to use the Neuroguard IEP® System at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center on June 25. This system is a first-of-its-kind treatment option for carotid artery disease (CAD) by combining a built-in filter, balloon, and stent into a single device.
Developed by Contego Medical, the Neuroguard IEP® System, with a built-in filter, balloon, and stent, is an FDA-approved 3-in-1 stenting system physicians use to restore blood flow that is restricted due to CAD. During the procedure, a stent is placed in the carotid artery to keep blood flowing. Then, a small balloon is inflated to help the stent stay in place against the artery walls. A filter helps trap tiny blood clots called emboli that may be released during the procedure and can cause stroke. Most patients return home from the hospital the day after the procedure.
“The Neuroguard IEP® carotid stent system provides an excellent combination of plaque coverage, embolic protection, and ease of deployment,” said Dr. Lodha. “The integrated filter allows for continuous protection throughout the entire procedure without the need for device exchanges, reducing procedural time and complexity.”
The carotid arteries are located in the neck and serve the important function of supplying blood to the neck, head, and brain. There are two carotid arteries, one on each side of the neck. CAD occurs when fatty deposits, or plaque, builds up within the inner walls of these arteries leading to partial or complete blockages. CAD progresses slowly and can often go undiagnosed for a long period of time. The consequences can be life-threatening.
