Medical terms can be hard to understand for the average person. But as professionals of our craft, we’re here to help patients better understand their diagnosis so they can get the treatment they really need. Have you or a loved one been recently diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT)? CIS provides treatment for DVT in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and beyond. We are here to help you learn about DVT and what the diagnosis means for you.
Most commonly seen in the legs, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot develops. This condition is dangerous because the clots can break loose. If one of these loose clots travels to your lungs, it disrupts your normal blood flow. This life-threatening condition is known as a pulmonary embolism. It requires immediate medical attention. Postphlebitic syndrome is another serious complication resulting from DVT. (It’s also known as post-thrombotic syndrome.) This condition results in DVT-induced edema, sores, and discoloration.
Unfortunately, DVT doesn’t always cause noticeable symptoms. Patients don’t experience the fluttering heart or chest pain of other cardiac issues. When patients do have DVT symptoms, they often experience leg pain, soreness, or cramping. Redness or warmth in the leg can occur as well.
Even informed patients can miss the subtle symptoms of DVT. That’s why it’s critical to know your chances of developing it. If you fall into any of the below categories, you might be at an increased risk of developing DVT.
Stay vigilant, know your body, and regularly consult with a cardiologist. Your doctor can help you determine more about your risk factors and diagnosis. To determine if you have DVT, a cardiologist can perform a variety of tests. These include X-rays, imaging tests (such as CTs, MRIs, and ultrasounds), as well as blood tests.
Deep vein thrombosis treatments focus on keeping clots from growing or moving. Blood-thinning medications are the most common form of this prevention. If your case is more severe, then surgical intervention may be necessary.
