Jimmy Deshotels of Zachary, Louisiana’s message to others is simple: “Don’t count yourself out. Don’t let aging dictate what you can or can’t do. And if getting through your day starts to feel harder than it should, get checked out.”
With a job that requires constant activity, Jimmy had always felt healthy. But about two years ago, he began noticing persistent fatigue and shortness of breath, especially while working outdoors during the summer. He found himself easily out of breath and constantly tired. At first, Jimmy assumed it was just a part of getting older.
“I didn’t have chest pain, so I didn’t think it was a heart issue,” he shared. “But it was.”
After a second year of feeling this way, Jimmy visited his primary care physician, who referred him for further evaluation. That referral led him to CIS, where he met Dr. Phillip Smith, interventional cardiologist at CIS in Baton Rouge and Zachary.
Following a series of diagnostic tests, Jimmy was diagnosed with aortic stenosis related to a bicuspid aortic valve. The aortic valve has three flaps; a bicuspid aortic valve means a person is born with only two. Over time, this can cause the valve to stiffen and narrow, leading to aortic stenosis, which can make the heart work harder to pump blood.
He was also diagnosed with coronary artery disease, which occurs when plaque builds up along the inner walls of the coronary arteries and restricts blood flow.
“Dr. Smith was very good at explaining everything to me. He sat with me for as long as I needed and made sure I understood everything. The entire healthcare team was great, and overall it was a very positive experience. I felt truly comforted knowing people were really listening and helping me understand.”
“My goal is always to make sure patients leave the room understanding exactly what’s happening and what our plan is,” said Dr. Smith. “When patients understand their diagnosis and the path forward, it takes away a lot of fear and helps them feel in control again.”
After receiving treatment, Jimmy says he feels like himself again, with the energy to take on each day. Looking back, he’s grateful he listened to his body and sought care when something didn’t feel right. Now, he shares his story to encourage others not to ignore the warning signs and to seek care early.
“I feel blessed,” Jimmy said. “I truly believe the care I received and answered prayers played a role in how quickly I healed.”
