Everyone wants to feel confident in their appearance, particularly during the summer months when south Louisiana's high temps demand lighter clothing. Slipping on a pair of shorts is an easy way to combat the heat outdoors. Unless, of course, you are one of many women whose varicose veins have left them self-conscious about showing their legs.
What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are the twisted, swollen veins that plague many women, primarily in the legs. While they may also occur in men, these veins appear in twice as many female patients as male. In addition to bulging out, they may also be noticeable due to discoloration, often appearing blue or purple.
The source of varicose veins are weak or damaged veins due to age, weight, or pregnancy. As blood begins to back up and pool in these veins, they become swollen, misshapen, and increasingly visible through the skin.
What are the Complications of Varicose Veins?
Although rare, there are also health risks which may be associated with varicose veins. These may include:
- Ulcers
- Bleeding
- Blood Clots
In order to address both the cosmetic concerns and potential health risks, there are a number of treatment options available to address and correct varicose veins. Among the most commonly used is a procedure known as radiofrequency ablation or endovenous ablation.
How Does Radiofrequency Ablation Treat Varicose Veins?
The procedure begins with a map of the veins. This map is obtained by the physician through ultrasound imaging. Next, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the entry point, and a catheter is inserted into the vein. Through this catheter, a radiofrequency fiber is threaded. Radiofrequency energy is then delivered via the fiber to destroy and collapse the damaged vein.
Why Should You Choose Radiofrequency Ablation for Varicose Veins?
There are many potential treatment options for varicose veins. However, radiofrequency ablation is one of the most desirable for several reasons:
- The procedure is short, taking only about an hour in an outpatient setting.
- In comparison to many other methods, ablation is more reliably effective and carries a lower risk of complication.
- There is no downtime associated, and patients typically report improvement in symptoms such as pain nearly immediately.
- Thanks to the small incision size, the procedure leaves no scars.
