Lafayette, LA – Dr. Marc Saad, Electrophysiologist at the Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS), became the first in Acadiana to use the Aveir™ DR Dual Chamber Leadless Pacemaker System to treat people with abnormal or slow heart rhythms. The procedure took place on March 3rd at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center.
Abbott’s Aveir™ DR dual chamber leadless pacemaker system, approved by the FDA in June 2023, is the world’s first dual chamber leadless pacemaker system. Roughly one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker, the atrial and ventricular components of the AVEIR DR leadless pacemakers can communicate with each other through the first-of-its-kind implant-to-implant (i2i™) technology to establish continuous, synchronized pacing between the right atrium and the right ventricle. AVEIR leadless pacemakers are also engineered to be retrieved should a person’s therapy needs change, or they need a replacement device in the future.
“The AVEIR™ DR system is a significant advancement, as physicians can now provide a treatment option with pacing to the upper and lower chambers of the heart that is less invasive,” said Dr. Saad. “Unlike traditional pacemakers, this system improves comfort, allows for a quicker return to normal activity, reduces complications and long-term risks, and improves quality of life. These devices are placed directly in the heart, where they are unseen and out of mind.”
