HOUMA- To create awareness about heart disease prevention, Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) is hosting a free electrocardiogram (EKG) screening and educational presentations on Thursday, April 20 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the CIS Houma clinic at 225 Dunn Street.
The presentations will feature smoking cessation educational information from Brandi Degruise, family nurse practitioner with the Osteoporosis Clinic at Haydel Spine Pain and Wellness, and David Theriot, nurse practitioner at CIS. Learn about the effects that smoking has on bone density, as well as the importance of prevention and the resources available through Commit To Quit, CIS’s free smoking cessation program that offers provider visits, medications and counseling services.
Guests are welcome to come for the screening, for the presentations, or for both.An EKG is a painless test that records the electrical signals of the heart. The screening can detect blockages, the thickness of the heart wall, past heart attacks and more. Screening results will be reviewed onsite, and CIS providers will be providing personal health risk assessments. Risk factors of cardiovascular disease include family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as smoking, being overweight or being inactive.
