HOUMA- Interventional cardiologists at Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) are the first in the world to use the new Terumo SlenGuide, 7Fr Radial Guide to perform an intervention of a common femoral artery for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease.
Dr. Pradeep Nair performed the first procedure via a right radial approach at Terrebonne General Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Craig Walker.
Additionally, CIS was the first in the world to perform carotid artery stenting using the new 6Fr Terumo Destination Slender sheath. Dr. Pradeep Nair collaborated with CIS interventional cardiologist, Dr. Peter Fail, on this complex case involving dual, critical stenoses of the left common carotid and internal carotid artery.
“The radial approach for non-cardiac, vascular interventions has become possible for select patients through use of these new, ‘radial-friendly’ guides and sheaths,” said Dr. Nair. “As technology continues to evolve and devices become longer, we will soon be able to offer this approach to a wider selection of patients.”
CIS is committed to pioneering this effort as the radial approach results in enhanced comfort and safety to the patient compared to femoral access. “Our ultimate goal is to translate these clear benefits into improved clinical outcomes,” explained Dr. Nair.
